A NEW Management Committee has been elected to run the affairs of Kano Golf Club 1908 (one of the Sporting Sections of Kano Club) in the ancient city of Kano. They include Mr David O. Emeana who was returned unopposed as the Captain of the Club believed to be the home of the oldest Golf Course in Nigeria.
Other members of the new Management Committee also returned unopposed are, Auwalu M. Ahmed – Secretary, Bashir Musa – Public Relations Officer, Rufa’i Marafa – Competition Secretary, Golf Professional Lawan Malam – Course Officer, Shu’aibu Abdulkadir Kame – Handicap Secretary, Auwalu M. Badawa – House Secretary, Fati Dalhatu – Lady Captain, Hamisu Mohammed and Nura A. Musa – Management Committee Members while the immediate past Captain of the Club, Ambassador Ali M. Magashi and Farouq A. Salim are appointed as Ex-Officio.
Similarly, the following members were co-opted to serve in the Management Committee with assigned portfolios: Ali H. Roda – Vice Captain, Rabi’u M. Diyam – Treasurer and Aseel Saleh – Bar Secretary. Golf Professional Kamalu Bako who is currently No. 07 in the Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria, PGAN, Order of Merit was confirmed as Special Assistant (Technical) to the new Captain.
The election of the Kano Golf Club 1908 new Management Committee was part of the proceedings of the 2026 General Meeting of Golf playing members of Kano Club held at the Multipurpose Hall of the Club.
In his post election speech, the new Captain Mr David Emeana, pledged to foster the spirit of inclusiveness, sportsmanship and excellence. He vowed to always ensure that every Golfer feels valued and will be supported and inspired to enjoy the game.
He said the new Management Committee under his leadership will endevour develop the game of Golf in Kano to the fullest and encourage greater participation in competitions and social events and strengthen camaraderie among members.
Mr. David Emeana remarked: ‘Golf is at its best when it brings people together. I will strive to create an environment where friendships flourish both on and off the course”.
The Captain promised to immediately bring back the mandatory in-house weekly kitty and monthly competitions among members and will explore all avenues to enable Kano Golf Club 1908 host local, zonal, national and international tournaments.
He said with the prevailing peaceful environment and the age-long hospitality of the people of Kano, professional and amateur golfers from all over the world will be coming to play at the historic golf course that will in turn boost the economy and develop tourism.
He paid tribute to some of the former Captains of Kano Golf Club 1908 such as late Air Vice Marshal Mukhtar Mohammed (Rtd), late Dr Colonel Osad Osamwonyi, late Alhaji Audu Lukat, Jim Lloyd Jennings, Nasiru Maitama Sule, Haider Suleiman, Colonel Yakubu Bako (Rtd), Ibrahim Babangida Umar and Ambassador Ali Magashi for their selfless services and commended the untiring efforts and commitments of the immediate past President of Kano Golf Club, late Alhaji Muhammadu Lawan Koguna – Durbin Kano and the Lebanese Community towards the development of the game in Kano.
Meanwhile, a Member of Board of Nigerian Golf Federation, NGF, representing Northwest zone, Alhaji Ibrahim Babangida Umar, FCNA, (Ma’ajin Dutse), has sent a Congratulatory message to the new Captain urging him to focus on the mandate given by the members to improve the infrastructures and facilities of the Club and continue with the good legacies of past leaders.
“My acquaintance with you as a disciplined and gentle golfer and a committed member always desirous of an improved Kano Golf Club 1908, I am confident you will succeed. I advise you to carry all members of the management committee, the staff and entire members of the Club along with you to achieve your objectives”, concluded the message of Babangida Umar who is the immediate past President of Kano Club an Ex (two terms) Captain of the Golf Club.
Kano Golf Club was established in 1908 as one of the sports centres of the British Army after the conquest of Kano on February 3, 1903 by a detachment of the West African Frontier Force led by an adventurous Canadian Officer, Colonel Thomas L. N. Morland.
According to an elder statesman, scholar, historian and a veteran golfer, late Muhammadu Uba Adamu (Kantoma), historical documents show that the growth of the European population in Kano facilitated the growth of golf as a game through the participation of members of the British Commercial and Administrative establishment.
It resulted in Barclays Bank now Union Bank to be the first commercial establishment in Kano to organize the premier Golf Competition in 1922, the year Lord Lugard became its Chairman.
