VICE President Kashim Shettima has revealed how, barely three months after the current administration came into power, some individuals allegedly attempted to create tension between him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by accusing him of plotting to eliminate the president and assume power.
News Point Nigeria reports that Shettima made the disclosure while speaking at the public presentation of My Life of Duty and Allegiance, the autobiography of former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon.
According to the Vice President, the individuals, whom he said he would not name but described as people from Borno State—told President Tinubu that he was planning to kill him and take over leadership.
He said the allegation was made during the early months of their administration, when trust between key political actors was still being tested.
Shettima recounted that President Tinubu personally called him over the matter, jokingly warning him about claims that he should stop wearing “Shettima’s clothes.”
The Vice President explained that Tinubu dismissed the allegations after finding inconsistencies in the story, noting that the narrative did not align with the political reality before the election, when both men were still aspirants.
Shettima said Tinubu further reasoned that if the alleged plot had any credibility, the political alignment that produced both of them as candidates would not have been possible.
He added that despite renewed attempts by the same individuals to push the claim after the election, President Tinubu ultimately rejected the allegations.
According to him, Tinubu even continued to wear garments gifted to him earlier, dismissing any superstitious interpretation attached to the claims.
Shettima used the moment to urge Nigerians to embrace unity and mutual trust, rather than engaging in what he described as divisive politics that weaken national cohesion.
