A CHIEFTAIN of the All Progressives Congress and Senator representing Plateau North Senatorial District, Pam Dachungyang, has rejected the conduct of Monday’s APC Senate primary for the district, describing the exercise as a “sham” that failed to meet democratic standards.
News Point Nigeria reports that Dachungyang made his position known while addressing journalists in Jos on Wednesday after a meeting with his campaign team, aides, coordinators, and other stakeholders.
The senator alleged that the primary election was marred by irregularities and the absence of party officials in several parts of the senatorial zone.
According to him, his supporters and coordinators were fully prepared for the exercise, but the process could not be regarded as credible because officials assigned to conduct the election were reportedly absent in many locations.
He strongly condemned the conduct of the primary election, insisting that the exercise violated both the spirit of democracy and the constitution of the APC.
Dachungyang further stated that no consensus arrangement was reached before the primary election and maintained that he was never consulted as the sitting senator representing the zone.
The lawmaker argued that no valid election actually took place and called on the leadership of the party to fix a fresh date for what he described as a transparent and credible primary election.
He also warned that mishandling the process could create tension within the party and negatively affect the APC’s electoral fortunes in Plateau State ahead of future elections.
While expressing confidence in the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the national leadership of the APC, Dachungyang said he believes the party would address the concerns raised and ensure justice is done.
The senator further appealed to his supporters to remain calm and law-abiding while awaiting further action from the party leadership over the disputed primary election.
