JUSTICE Peter Kekemeke of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja, has remanded the former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his bail application.
News Point Nigeria reports that Umar was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a four-count charge bordering on allegedly conferring undue advantage on himself while serving as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
The former CCT chairman pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against him.
Following his plea, counsel to the EFCC, Christopher Mshelia, urged the court to fix a date for the commencement of trial and requested that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.
Counsel to Umar, however, informed the court that a bail application had already been filed on behalf of his client and urged Justice Kekemeke to hear and determine the application.
The prosecution opposed the request for an immediate hearing, arguing that it had only just been served with the bail application and would require time to study and respond to it.
After listening to both parties, Justice Kekemeke adjourned the matter until July 15 for the hearing of the bail application.
Pending the determination of the bail request, the court ordered that Danladi Umar be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
