‘His Contract Ended In May’, MAAUN Says Lecturer Linked To Sexual Harassment No Longer Employed

THE Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has clarified that Dr Nasa’i Gwadabe, whose name has been linked to sexual harassment allegations circulating on social media, is no longer affiliated with the institution.

    NEW UBA

News Point Nigeria reports that the university, in a statement sent to News Point Nigeria on Thursday and signed by its Registrar, Habibu Awaisu, said Gwadabe’s one-year appointment as a visiting lecturer expired in May 2026 and was not renewed.

“The Management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria wishes to clarify recent reports circulating on social media regarding Dr. Nasa’i Gwadabe. His one-year appointment ended in May 2026 and was not renewed. He is therefore no longer affiliated with MAAUN,” the statement said.

The university explained that visiting lecturers are engaged on renewable one-year contracts, with renewals dependent on satisfactory performance, institutional requirements and approval by the management.

According to the statement, Gwadabe’s appointment expired alongside those of several other visiting lecturers whose contracts also came to an end during the same period.

MAAUN, which was recently listed among the 24 Nigerian universities featured in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward sexual harassment, abuse and exploitation.

The institution stressed its commitment to maintaining a safe, secure and conducive learning environment for all students.

The university further disclosed that its founder had instituted a reward of ₦5 million for any female student who reports and provides credible evidence of sexual harassment or assault involving any lecturer or staff member through the appropriate reporting channels.

According to the management, the initiative underscores the institution’s determination to combat all forms of harassment and protect students from abuse.

MAAUN also dismissed reports alleging that a student had been delayed by two years because of the incident or that a postgraduate student was among the alleged victims, describing the claims as false.

It explained that the university only recently graduated its first set of students and has not yet commenced postgraduate programmes.

The management urged members of the public and media organisations to report the matter accurately and avoid portraying Gwadabe as a current member of the university’s academic staff.

It reaffirmed that his association with the institution ended in May 2026 and restated its commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, ethics and accountability.
