A TWO-STOREY building under construction on Sultan Road in Kano collapsed at about 9 a.m. on Friday, trapping four persons beneath the rubble and triggering an emergency rescue operation.
News Point Nigeria reports that three of the victims had been rescued as of the time of filing this report, while frantic efforts were still underway to save the remaining person trapped under the debris.
Eyewitnesses said workers at the construction site noticed signs of structural failure while carrying out work on the top floor of the building and immediately fled to safety.
However, four people, including a security guard and a tricycle rider, were unable to escape before the structure caved in.
Confirming the incident, one of the workers at the site, Shuaibu Yaro, said labourers had already begun moving sand upstairs when the site engineer detected indications that the building was about to collapse.
“We came to work here and had started taking sand upstairs when the site engineer noticed the signs of collapse. We rushed to safety, but unfortunately three people were in front of the gate and one other person was trapped,” Yaro said.
He added that emergency responders had so far rescued three victims, including the security guard and his friend, while one person remained trapped beneath the wreckage.
“Three have been rescued, including the security guard and his friend, while one person remains trapped,” he said.
According to Yaro, those rescued sustained varying degrees of injuries and were immediately taken to Sir Muhammadu Sanusi Hospital in Kano for medical treatment.
Rescue operations were still ongoing at the scene as emergency personnel continued efforts to locate and evacuate the remaining victim.
