MARY Amaechi, the mother of Rotimi Amaechi, the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has died at the age of 89.
News Point Nigeria reports that the death of the family matriarch was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the media office of the former Rivers State governor.
According to the statement, Mary Amaechi passed away on Thursday, leaving behind a legacy of love, unity and service to her community.
“Late Mrs Mary Amaechi was a cherished matriarch who held her family together in love, peace and unity,” the statement said.
It further described her as a prominent community women leader and devout Christian whose faith in God remained steadfast and unwavering throughout her lifetime.
“She was a community women leader and Christian leader, whose belief and faith in God were firm and resolute.
“She was loved and highly respected in her community and will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support for those around her and beyond,” the statement added.
The media office noted that Rotimi Amaechi and other members of the family were deeply appreciative of the outpouring of sympathy and support they had already received following her passing.
“Rt Hon. Amaechi and the entire family are profoundly grateful for the outpouring of condolences and love already being shown them during this difficult time,” the statement read.
It added that details of the funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
Amaechi’s mother died weeks after the former Minister of Transportation emerged as the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general election.
The ADC had in June named Amaechi as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Atiku secured the party’s presidential ticket in May after polling 1,846,370 votes to defeat Amaechi, who garnered 504,117 votes.
Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, former managing director of the defunct FSB International Bank, came third in the contest with 177,120 votes.
