RESIDENTS of Bajallabe, around the FCE Gate 1 axis of Kano metropolis, have been commended for rejecting an alleged ₦10 million inducement and alerting security authorities to a suspected drug trafficking operation in the community.
News Point Nigeria reports that the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when residents reportedly noticed a Golf vehicle allegedly loaded with substances suspected to be illicit drugs, parked alongside a motorcycle near a residential building in the area.
The statement, signed by Lamara Garba, MNIPR, Member, Media & Publicity Committee, Multi Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Substances, Kano State, said the residents’ action demonstrated courage, vigilance and civic responsibility.
According to the Task Force, residents who became suspicious of the vehicle approached the driver and demanded clarification regarding its contents.
The driver allegedly responded by offering ₦10 million to community representatives and vigilante personnel in an attempt to persuade them to overlook the matter.
However, the offer was reportedly rejected, with the community members insisting that the appropriate authorities be invited to investigate the situation.
The Chairman of the local vigilante group subsequently contacted the Multi Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Substances, while also alerting the Nigeria Police Force, Rijiyar Zaki Division, as tension reportedly began to build at the scene.
Police personnel responded promptly and took custody of the vehicle and the individuals involved before transferring them to the Rijiyar Zaki Police Division for further investigation.
Operatives of the Multi Agency Task Force also moved to the scene and commenced collaboration with the relevant authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
The Task Force clarified that the substances recovered from the vehicle are only suspected illicit substances, stressing that their exact nature and status would be established through appropriate investigation and, where necessary, laboratory examination.
Commending the residents and vigilante personnel, Chairman of the Multi Agency Task Force, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, described their refusal to compromise the investigation despite the alleged financial inducement as a demonstration of community vigilance and civic responsibility.
Rimin Gado said the incident underscored the important role communities play in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse, urging residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to the relevant authorities.
The Task Force also commended the Nigeria Police Force, Rijiyar Zaki Division, for its prompt response, noting that the decision by the residents to invite law enforcement agencies rather than taking the law into their own hands helped maintain peace and uphold due process.
The agency further disclosed that, in line with the Executive Order recently signed by the Kano State Governor, the property where the suspected substances were discovered would be sealed, while other necessary measures would be taken in accordance with the provisions of the order.
The Task Force urged residents across Kano State to promptly report suspicious activities involving the trafficking, distribution, storage or sale of illicit drugs and other prohibited substances to the appropriate authorities.
It, however, cautioned members of the public against confronting suspected offenders or taking the law into their own hands, stressing that information should be channelled through relevant law enforcement and regulatory agencies.
Traditional and religious leaders, market associations, youth organisations, vigilante groups, community development associations and other stakeholders were also urged to strengthen collaboration with government and security agencies to combat drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
The Task Force said the Bajallabe incident had once again demonstrated that the fight against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking could not be left to government and security agencies alone, but required active participation from communities and other stakeholders.
It reaffirmed its commitment to working with communities across Kano State to build a safer, healthier and drug-free society, assuring residents that necessary steps would be taken to ensure a thorough investigation and the administration of justice.
