‘A Century of Sacrifice and Service’, Fayemi Celebrates Fasoranti At 100

FORMER Kayode Fayemi has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as an extraordinary patriot whose life embodies sacrifice, courage, integrity and unwavering commitment to democracy and justice.

In a tribute made available to News Point Nigeria on May 10, 2026, Fayemi joined family members, associates, admirers and well-wishers across Nigeria and beyond in celebrating Fasoranti’s centenary anniversary, describing the milestone as both a rare divine blessing and a remarkable testament to enduring relevance in national life.

“It is with profound gratitude to God and deep admiration that I join family, friends, associates, compatriots, and countless admirers across Nigeria and the world in celebrating the centenary anniversary of our father, my principal, an extraordinary patriot, elder statesman, democracy activist and Afenifere leader, Chief Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti,” Fayemi stated.

According to him, Fasoranti’s life represents a century of sacrifice, courage, integrity and steadfast commitment to justice, good governance and the advancement of the Yoruba people within a united and democratic Nigeria.

Fayemi said the elder statesman had personally served as more than a political leader to him, describing him as a father figure, mentor, teacher, counsellor and moral compass.

“Over the years, I have benefitted immensely from his wisdom, encouragement, and steadfast belief in principled leadership. In moments of political uncertainty and national turbulence, Baba remained one of those rare voices whose convictions never shifted with convenience,” he said.

The former governor added that Fasoranti’s guidance consistently reinforced values of courage, moderation, discipline and service to the people.

Highlighting the nonagenarian’s contribution to education and human development, Fayemi said Fasoranti’s legacy continues to inspire generations, particularly those privileged to have passed through his tutelage.

He noted that Fasoranti graduated from the then University of Ibadan, formerly known as University College Ibadan, before acquiring a postgraduate certificate in Education as well as a Master’s degree in Education Administration and School Management from the University of Hull and Maguire University in Australia.

“As a teacher, administrator, and community leader, he understood early that the future of any society rests on the quality of its education and the moral character of its citizens. His life of simplicity, humility, and service continues to inspire generations of leaders,” Fayemi added.

The former governor also described Fasoranti as an astute politician and committed disciple of late Obafemi Awolowo, noting his active participation in the Action Group during the First Republic and later in the Unity Party of Nigeria during the Second Republic.

Fayemi recalled that Fasoranti served as Commissioner for Finance in the administration of late Adekunle Ajasin in the old Ondo State, where he distinguished himself through principled leadership and dedication to public service.

He further praised Fasoranti’s role during Nigeria’s years under military rule, saying the Afenifere leader stood firmly for democracy, constitutionalism and the rights of the people during some of the country’s darkest political periods.

“Through the difficult years of military dictatorship, he remained resolute in defending democratic freedoms, constitutionalism, and the rights of the people. His courage, alongside that of other patriots within Afenifere, helped sustain the democratic spirit that eventually culminated in the rebirth of democratic governance in Nigeria,” Fayemi stated.

Beyond politics, Fayemi said Fasoranti made immeasurable contributions to the development of the Yoruba nation through his advocacy for unity, cultural pride, education, fairness and communal progress.

According to him, Fasoranti’s leadership within Afenifere helped preserve the ideals of federalism, equity and people-oriented governance that have long defined Yoruba progressive politics.

He added that the elder statesman consistently advocated restructuring and true federalism, not as political slogans, but as essential foundations for national stability and inclusive development.

“At 100 years, Baba Fasoranti remains a towering symbol of integrity in public life. In an era where values are increasingly contested, his life remains a testament to the fact that true leadership is measured not by power or position, but by sacrifice, consistency, and fidelity to principle,” Fayemi said.

The former governor stressed that the centenary celebration was not merely about honouring longevity but celebrating a century of purposeful living, democratic struggle and national service.

“As we celebrate this historic milestone, we do not merely honour the longevity of an individual; we celebrate a century of purposeful living and national service. We celebrate a man whose life has enriched Nigeria’s democratic journey and strengthened the voice and aspirations of the Yoruba people,” he added.

Fayemi, on behalf of his wife, Bisi, and the rest of his family, congratulated Fasoranti on the landmark celebration and prayed for continued peace, strength and joy for the elder statesman.
