IN the heart of Kano, along the familiar stretch of Daurawa on Maiduguri Road where community, faith, and resilience shape lives stood a man whose story was not only one of survival, but of purpose, discipline, and quiet greatness.
This is a tribute to my father, Late Alhaji Nura Usman Alkasim, fondly called Kawu, a man whose life journey continues to echo in the lives he touched and the legacy he built.
He grew up as an orphan, raised by a devoted mother and guided by mentors who instilled in him the values of hard work, humility, and perseverance.
From those early, uncertain beginnings, he carved a path defined by determination and dignity. In the streets and homes of Daurawa, where every child learns resilience early, he learned not just to survive but to rise.
Also known as Mai Gulu, he passed through formal education and went on to acquire technical skills that would shape his future, becoming a Chief Engineer with deep expertise in both mechanical and civil engineering.
His years of experience opened doors for him, allowing him to serve in both government and private sectors across Kano. Yet, beyond certificates and titles, what truly defined him was his mastery of his craft and his unwavering commitment to excellence.
He was calm, composed, and deeply generous, a man who spoke little but did much. In a world where noise often overshadows substance, Kawu was different. His strength was in his quiet confidence, his ability to listen, and his readiness to help without seeking recognition.
Through vision and hard work, he built Gulu Automobile, a venture that later evolved into Gulu Engineering and Technical Services Ltd. This was more than a business, it was a platform through which he empowered others.
He trained, mentored, and uplifted many, giving people not just jobs, but dignity and direction. In the workshops and offices he built, countless lives found purpose.
But perhaps his greatest legacy lies in the family he nurtured and the faith he lived by. He built his home upon the foundation of Islam, not merely in words but in action.
He supported family members, relatives, and friends in fulfilling one of the greatest pillars of faith, the pilgrimage to Mecca. His generosity flowed especially during Ramadan and Sallah, when he extended his hands to those in need, embodying the true spirit of sadaqah and compassion.
He was an amazing and caring gentleman, a father whose presence brought comfort, whose advice brought clarity, and whose life brought inspiration. He is survived by his wives and many children each of us carrying a piece of his strength, his values, and his dreams.
He did not only raise a family; he established a foundation solid, enduring, and purposeful upon which we can all continue to build. His life was not just lived; it was invested in people, in faith, and in community.
I recall the words of one of his staff, which still echo deeply in my heart: “Any problem that gets to Alhaji’s desk is solved, financially or otherwise.” That was who he was a problem solver, a pillar of support, a man people could rely on without hesitation.
Today, as we remember him, we do so with gratitude and pride. Though he has returned to his Creator, his legacy remains alive in every life he touched, every value he instilled, and every path he helped shape.
May Allah forgive his shortcomings, expand his grave, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and continue to bless the family and legacy he left behind. Amin.
