VICE President Kashim Shettima will begin a two-week leave on Thursday, August 6, 2026, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking his first official leave since he was sworn into office on May 29, 2023.
News Point Nigeria reports that during the two-week break, the Vice President will devote time to study, reflection and intellectual renewal as part of efforts to strengthen his capacity for continued service to the nation and prepare for the next phase of the administration’s programmes.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Vice President’s spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, who said the leave would provide Senator Shettima with an opportunity to review the administration’s ongoing initiatives, deepen his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues, and better position himself for the responsibilities ahead as the Federal Government intensifies implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to the statement, the leave is intended to enable the Vice President to reflect on key government programmes while equipping himself intellectually for the challenges of governance.
Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Shettima has remained actively engaged in coordinating and supervising several strategic government initiatives, particularly in the areas of economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.
The statement noted that the Vice President has also chaired the National Economic Council (NEC), which brings together the governors of the 36 states, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other key public officials to deliberate on policies affecting the economy and the welfare of Nigerians.
“Beyond his responsibilities within the country, Vice President Shettima has represented President Tinubu at major international and regional engagements, advancing Nigeria’s position on economic integration, peace and security, climate action, investment and sustainable development,” the statement said.
It added that Senator Shettima remained committed to the principles of loyalty, duty and public service that have characterised his role in the Tinubu administration.
“Senator Shettima remains deeply committed to the ideals of loyalty, duty and service that have defined his role in the administration, as well as to supporting President Tinubu’s efforts to build a more secure, productive and prosperous Nigeria,” the statement added.
The Presidency further stated that the Vice President would resume his official responsibilities at the expiration of the two-week leave with renewed energy and dedication to national service.
“The Vice President will return to office at the end of the two-week leave period and resume his official responsibilities with renewed energy and dedication to the service of the nation,” the statement said.
