CHADIAN authorities, in cooperation with international police partners, have arrested a group of suspected killers and thieves linked to a brazen theft of 163 million CFA francs in January 2025, law enforcement officials said in statements this week.
The National Police of Chad announced that the suspects were taken into custody in neighboring Cameroon with assistance from the International Criminal Police Organization, commonly known as Interpol.
The arrests cap a months-long investigation into the robbery and alleged homicides that occurred on Jan. 13, 2025, in the Mardjandaffack district, a volatile area in the Chadian capital.
According to the police, the theft involved the disappearance of 163 million CFA francs (about $260,000), which was taken during a violent incident that also left authorities investigating possible connections to murder.
The suspects were tracked after Chadian investigators shared intelligence with Interpol’s liaison officers in Cameroon, leading to their detention by Cameroonian law enforcement.
Interpol’s involvement underscored the cross-border nature of the case and the growing trend of African nations working together to tackle transnational crime.
In recent years, the global policing agency has coordinated multiple operations with African partners to dismantle crime syndicates involved in cybercrime, fraud, and other large-scale criminal enterprises across the continent.
Officials in N’Djamena did not immediately release the identities of the suspects or details of the charges they face. The Chadian National Police said further investigations were continuing, and additional arrests could be possible as the case unfolds.
The collaboration with Cameroonian authorities reflects a broader regional push to strengthen law enforcement ties and share real-time intelligence to combat organized crime networks that often operate across porous borders.
Prosecutors in Chad are expected to formally charge the suspects once extradition procedures or legal transfers are complete, according to a police spokesperson in the country.
