THE Chadian government has ordered the immediate closure of its border with Nigeria, citing heightened security concerns and intelligence suggesting movement of armed groups in the Lake Chad region following escalating geopolitical tensions.
News Point Nigeria reports that multiple military sources in N’Djamena confirmed to counterterrorism analyst Zagazola Makama on Monday that President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno directed a total lockdown along the Chadian–Nigerian boundary.
The move follows intelligence reports that terror elements operating in northern Nigeria may attempt to escape into Chadian territory amid fears of possible United States military operations in parts of West Africa.
Security agencies have since been placed on maximum alert, with armored vehicles and heavily armed troops deployed to strategic border corridors.
A senior Chadian military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the action was taken as a pre-emptive measure: “We will not allow any armed group or foreign military force to exploit the regional situation to destabilise Chad,” the officer stated.
President Déby was also quoted as saying that Chad’s territorial integrity is non-negotiable, warning that no entity, hostile or otherwise would be permitted to enter the country “under any disguise.”
The shutdown comes amid mounting insecurity across the Sahel, shifting counterterrorism alliances, and renewed speculation surrounding U.S. strategic activities in the region particularly after US President Donald Trump recently hinted at potential military action in Nigeria over attacks on Christians.
Makama noted that while the measures may help block militants seeking refuge, the closure risks economic and humanitarian disruptions for cross-border communities reliant on trade and seasonal movement.
He added that Chadian authorities have not specified how long the border will remain closed but affirmed that the situation will be reviewed based on evolving regional dynamics.
However, security sources in Borno State, which shares a major northeastern border with Chad disputed reports of the closure, insisting that free movement was still taking place across local border communities as of Monday evening.
The conflicting accounts highlight a fast-moving situation and communication gaps between both countries’ security structures.
