A CAR rammed into a gas store on Arab Road, Kubwa, Abuja, in the early hours of Sunday, triggering a major explosion that sent shockwaves across the area.
News Point Nigeria reports that the incident occurred at about 6:15am, with witnesses saying the impact of the explosion was felt several kilometres away from the scene.
Residents of Dantata Estate, Kubwa, located about two kilometres from the scene, were said to have felt the impact as buildings reportedly vibrated following the explosion.
“The explosion was loud enough to wake people from their sleep, and we could feel the buildings shaking. Everyone was wondering what had happened,” a resident said.
The explosion and ensuing inferno also destroyed a shelter stand and signposts at the nearby Liberty Junction, while several shops in the vicinity were affected by the fire.
The vehicle involved in the crash was completely razed in the incident, although the driver and a child who were inside the car were rescued and taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
When our correspondent visited the scene, security operatives and firefighters were already on the ground, working to contain the situation and restore normalcy to the area.
A large crowd had also gathered around the scene, obstructing the free flow of vehicular movement along the road as emergency and security personnel continued their operations.
