THE Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) with the commissioning of the rehabilitated New Bussa waterworks in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who commissioned the project, said the FG is dedicated to ensuring universal access to clean water and sanitation for all Nigerians.
The New Bussa waterworks, which had been moribund for over three decades, has been restored to provide sustainable water management and improve public health in the community.
The project is particularly significant for the community, which houses the Kainji dam, Nigeria’s largest hydroelectric dam.
The project was started in 2023 as an intervention effort by the National Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC). And for over 30 years, the project managed by the government of Niger State has not run a drop of water to homes in the growing New Bussa community.
While speaking at the event, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, represented by the Minister of State Agriculture and Food Security, Sahabi Abdullahi emphasised that the project is crucial for preventing water-borne diseases and promoting public health in the community.
On his part, Managing Director and Chief Executive of the National Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Abubakar Yelwa, assured the people of New Bussa that the commissioning of the project is just the beginning of the commission’s commitment to the town.
He revealed that the water scheme is a significant investment of over ₦2.1bn, which demonstrates the Federal Government’s dedication to the well-being of the people of New Bussa.
Visibly excited, the Emir of Bargu, Sani Haliru-Dantoro said the restoration of the waterworks is a compensation to the sacrifice and support the community has offered Nigeria’s electricity power supply.
