THE Kano State Government has expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a combined N8 billion donation to victims of the devastating fire that ravaged the popular Singer Market in Kano.
In a statement sent to News Point Nigeria on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, speaking on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, described the intervention as timely, compassionate, and deeply reassuring to thousands of affected traders.
According to the state government, President Tinubu approved the release of N5 billion as an intervention fund to support traders whose goods and shops were destroyed in the inferno.
The fire, which tore through large sections of Singer Market, left extensive economic losses in its wake, with many small and medium-scale business owners losing their primary source of livelihood.
“The magnitude of the loss recorded at the market deeply affected us all,” Waiya said. “This generous donation will go a long way in cushioning the suffering of the victims and helping them rebuild their businesses.”
He noted that the President’s gesture reflects a strong commitment to the welfare of Nigerians, particularly during moments of hardship and distress.
In addition to the federal intervention, governors under the APC, operating through the Progressive Governors’ Forum, collectively contributed N3 billion to further assist the victims.
The Kano State Government commended the governors for demonstrating solidarity and a shared sense of responsibility.
“Their collective donation reflects the true spirit of cooperative governance and national unity,” the statement read.
The combined N8 billion intervention, officials said, sends a clear message that Kano State is not alone in confronting the aftermath of the disaster.
The state government assured residents that the funds would be managed with transparency and accountability to ensure they reach the intended beneficiaries.
“As a government, we remain committed to working closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the proper utilization of these funds so that affected traders can quickly resume their trading activities,” Waiya stated.
He emphasized that mechanisms would be put in place to guarantee fair distribution and prevent diversion.
The commissioner also offered prayers for continued peace and protection for Kano State and the nation at large, expressing hope that such incidents would not recur.
For thousands of traders whose businesses were reduced to ashes, the N8 billion intervention now represents a critical lifeline and a chance to rebuild from the ruins.
