THE Plateau State Government has directed the reopening of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state from Monday, September 14, 2026, following the implementation of precautionary measures to contain suspected cases of diphtheria.
The government said the decision was aimed at balancing the need to protect pupils, students, teachers and other members of the school community with the need to ensure continuity in academic activities. News Point Nigeria reports that the directive comes after the temporary closure of schools across the state as part of measures to contain the suspected cases.
The temporary closure, which took effect on September 7, was described by the government as a preventive measure that allowed health authorities to assess the situation and strengthen surveillance, detection and response mechanisms in affected and potentially affected communities.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, the government assured parents, guardians, school proprietors and administrators that appropriate health measures were being put in place to minimise the risk of transmission as schools reopen.
The government directed school authorities to maintain clean and hygienic learning environments and ensure that basic precautionary measures are observed.
Teachers and school management were also urged to remain vigilant for symptoms suggestive of diphtheria and promptly report suspected cases to the appropriate health authorities.
Parents and guardians were similarly advised to prioritise personal hygiene, including regular handwashing and maintaining clean surroundings, while avoiding unnecessary close contact with persons showing suspicious symptoms.
The government further urged parents to seek prompt medical attention whenever children or other members of their households develop concerning symptoms.
It warned members of the public against self-medication or concealing suspected cases, stressing that early detection and appropriate treatment remain critical to preventing further spread of the disease.
The government called on parents, guardians, school proprietors, teachers and students to support its efforts by adhering to health advisories and ensuring that the resumption of academic activities is accompanied by responsible health practices.
Nigeria is battling a recurring diphtheria outbreak, which remains a major public health concern. The disease is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets and close contact. The outbreak has been linked mainly to low routine childhood immunisation coverage.
