THE Ekiti State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of three persons following a stampede at a hotel in Ikere Ekiti.
A source told News Point Nigeria that the incident occurred during an after-convocation party organised by students of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti, which held its second convocation ceremony on Saturday.
It was gathered that the situation turned chaotic during the party, leading to a stampede that resulted in fatalities.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, SP Sunday Abutu, said the Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, had ordered a thorough investigation.
The statement read, “The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident that happened at a hotel in Ikere Ekiti at about 1 am on Sunday that led to the death of a staff member of the hotel and two students.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that the students, after their convocation on 18th April, 2028, decided to move to the hotel for a party. During the party, which lasted till the following day, two yet-to-be-identified students had an argument and began to fight.
“Others around decided to run out of the hotel premises, and there was a stampede that claimed the lives of three persons. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue for autopsy.”
He said the Commissioner of Police commiserated with the families of the victims and assured that the command would leave no stone unturned in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident.
