CHAIRMAN of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that every valid vote cast in the 2027 general election will count, reaffirming the commission’s commitment to conducting credible, transparent and peaceful elections.
News Point Nigeria reports that Amupitan gave the assurance on Friday during a courtesy visit to former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), at his residence in Minna, Niger State.
During the visit, the INEC chairman described Abdulsalami as “the father of democracy in Nigeria,” noting that his successful transition from military to civilian rule in 1999 marked a defining moment in the country’s democratic history.
Amupitan said the electoral commission regarded the former Head of State not merely as a respected statesman but also as a pillar of support for INEC.
He also commended Abdulsalami’s leadership of the National Peace Committee, describing the committee’s peace accord initiative as “a moralising influence on Nigeria’s political ecosystem.”
According to him, the initiative has consistently provided political actors with a platform to commit themselves to non-violence before elections, thereby strengthening “the sovereignty of the will of the Nigerian people.”
The INEC chairman described the visit as “a pilgrimage of appreciation” in recognition of Abdulsalami’s enduring contributions to peaceful coexistence, peaceful elections and democratic stability in Nigeria.
Amupitan stressed that despite the challenges and pressures confronting the electoral commission, it remained resolute in ensuring that the true will of Nigerians, as expressed through the ballot, prevails.
“The commission’s determination under my leadership is to see ordinary Nigerians go out and vote, confident that their votes would be duly counted and reflected in the outcome of elections,” he said.
He added that this assurance remains the core responsibility INEC owes every Nigerian voter.
Amupitan also disclosed that the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled to hold on January 16, while the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will take place on February 6.
The INEC chairman further congratulated Abdulsalami on his recent 84th birthday, praising his continued commitment to democracy and national unity.
