THE Super Eagles’ preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers have suffered a major setback after first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali picked up an injury while playing for his South African club, Chippa United.
The 29-year-old, who has become Nigeria’s most reliable figure between the posts, was stretchered off in the first half of Chippa United’s league clash against Richards Bay on Tuesday.
He was visibly in discomfort after going down and could not continue.
While the extent of the injury is yet to be confirmed, the timing raises serious concerns for Nigeria, with back-to-back qualifiers against Rwanda and group leaders South Africa just weeks away.
Since making his debut for the Super Eagles, Nwabali has earned 21 caps and played a crucial role in stabilising Nigeria’s defence.
His commanding presence, sharp reflexes, and leadership in the penalty area have made him indispensable in coach Eric Chelle’s plans.
His absence would be a huge blow for Nigeria, who are currently fourth in their group with seven points, trailing leaders South Africa by six.
Victory in the next two games is seen as essential to keeping their qualification hopes alive.
Nwabali’s injury worsens an already troubling situation for Nigeria.
The team is without Maduka Okoye, who is serving a two-month suspension following a FIFA ban for involvement in illegal betting activities.
That leaves coach Chelle with limited and inexperienced options:
Amas Obasogie, based in Tanzania, yet to make a senior appearance for Nigeria.
Adebayo Adeleye, with Greek side Volos NPS, who has only one cap to his name.
Ebenezer Harcourt, a 15-year-old prodigy, recently called up after impressing at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, but considered too inexperienced for a high-stakes senior qualifier.
With Nigeria short of tested goalkeepers, Chelle faces tough decisions over whether to gamble on untested hands or seek emergency alternatives.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is awaiting Chippa United’s medical report before making an official statement on Nwabali’s availability.
The Super Eagles, who are chasing a return to the World Cup after missing out in 2022, know that anything less than victory in the coming fixtures could leave them on the brink of elimination.
