Court Orders Reopening Of Prime College Kano

A CHIEF Magistrate Court sitting at Gyadi Gyadi in Kano metropolis has vacated an order closing a private secondary school, Prime College.

    RAMADAN KAREEM

The presiding magistrate, Fauziyya Sheshe, on Monday ordered the reopening of the school with immediate effect.

Recalls that the Magistrate Court had, on 16th September, in a suit filed by Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board against Prime College, ordered a perpetual injunction pending the hearing and determination of a motion on notice.

The motion on notice was fixed for hearing on 7th October, 2025.

Magistrate Sheshe said she has vacated whatever restrictions that the Private and Voluntary Institutions Board had self-interpreted into her earlier order and that the school was at liberty to reopen.

She noted that the decision to vacate the order was based on an earlier application made by the State Counsel and her discretion.

The school’s legal team, which appeared before the court on Monday, had gone with the intention of challenging the legal propriety of the ‘perpetual orders’ procured against the school.

The matter before the court was the issue of fees affected by the school management.

In July 2025, Prime College announced an adjustment in fees for the 2025/26 academic year, citing inflation and the need to maintain teaching quality and infrastructure.

The management said flexible payment plans were made available to parents, assuring that no child would be denied education for inability to pay.

According to a statement by the school, over 94% of parents complied with the new rates. However, fewer than 20 parents rejected the increment, labelling the school “exploitative” and petitioning PVIB to intervene.

It said that the PVIB Executive Secretary, Malam Baba Abubakar Umar, visited the school in the company of some parents and appointed an interim caretaker PTA committee of eight parents and five teachers.

The committee reportedly voted in favour of the fee increase. Yet, the PVIB later declared the deliberations “inconclusive” and issued directives for the fees to be reversed.

Prime College management said efforts to engage the PVIB leadership were met with “abuse, denigration, and public embarrassment.”

On Wednesday, September 17, the school was served with an order from the Kano Magistracy halting implementation of the new fees and suspending operations.

The following day, September 18, it was announced in the media that Prime College had been shut down entirely, a move the school insists was a misinterpretation of the court order.
