NFF, Fans Outraged As FIFA Picks South African Referee For Super Eagles’ World Cup Playoff

TENSION is brewing ahead of the Super Eagles’ crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash as fans and football stakeholders express outrage over the appointment of South African match officials for Nigeria’s first-leg tie against Gabon.

    RAMADAN KAREEM

In a letter reportedly issued by FIFA on November 3, 2025 obtained by News Point Nigeria Sports, Tom Abongile of South Africa was named centre referee, with veteran assistant referee Zakhele Siwela and trailblazing female official Akhona Makalima appointed to support officiating and Video Assistant Refereeing (VAR) duties.

The match is scheduled to take place on November 13 at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium, Rabat, Morocco.

A referee assessor from the Benin Republic will supervise the officiating crew.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has privately expressed concerns over the appointment, citing strained football relations and perceived hostility from South Africa, one of Nigeria’s fiercest football rivals on the continent.

A senior NFF official who spoke to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana said the decision was “strange and troubling.”

“How can FIFA assign a South African team after their sports minister openly wished Nigeria wouldn’t qualify for the World Cup? Everyone knows the rivalry between both countries,” the official was quoted as saying.

The remarks refer to a widely publicised comment made earlier this year by a South African government official who reportedly declared he preferred to see Nigeria miss out on the 2026 World Cup.

The appointment has triggered a wave of protests online, with many demanding the NFF lodge a formal complaint to FIFA and CAF.

Popular media personality @PoojaMedia posted on X: “In fairness & sentiments, South African officials shouldn’t officiate Nigeria vs. Gabon in this World Cup playoff. How do you assign center ref, AR & VAR all from SA, despite a minister saying he doesn’t want Nigeria at the WC?”

Other fans suggested the officiating crew could be compromised due to regional rivalry and previous controversial matches involving South African referees.

Calls for FIFA to rescind the appointments continue to gain traction.

Nigeria advanced to this stage after a nail-biting win over Benin Republic in October—thanks to Frank Onyeka’s dramatic 89th-minute goal.

The winner of this Nigeria vs. Gabon playoff will battle the victor of DR Congo vs. Cameroon for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

FIFA has insisted that referee selections are made on the basis of experience, fitness, and neutrality.

South African referees are considered among Africa’s best and have officiated at multiple AFCON tournaments and the CAF Champions League.

For now, the NFF is expected to decide whether to escalate the matter formally or trust FIFA’s officiating protocols ahead of the high-stakes clash.
