SUPER Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has thrown open the doors of the national team to standout performers in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and uncapped Nigerian players abroad ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup, which will be staged at The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic, in London.
News Point Nigeria Sport reports that the Unity Cup, an invitational tournament played outside the FIFA international window, will see Nigeria defend the title they won last year against India, Jamaica and Zimbabwe when the 2026 edition holds in London from May 26 to 30.
With an eye on maintaining momentum and integrating new talents into the Super Eagles setup, Chelle indicated that NPFL players and foreign-based prospects who are yet to earn caps will be given opportunities to impress, while established regulars are expected to return for the June international friendlies against Portugal and Poland.
“The Unity Cup provides a platform to assess new players. I will comb Europe and invite new players of Nigerian descent, alongside those who were previously called up but never got the chance to feature.
Top players from the Nigeria Premier Football League will also be considered, as I will be watching a number of domestic league games from now until the end of the season,” Chelle said.
“For the big warm-up games in June against Poland and Portugal, I will feature my first-team players. These are games that can push us up the global ranking if we win them,” the Franco-Malian tactician added.
Now in its fourth edition, the Unity Cup will once again bring together countries with strong diaspora communities in the United Kingdom, with Nigeria and Jamaica expected to be among the leading contenders based on pedigree and ranking. Zimbabwe and India complete the four-team line-up.
India’s participation, according to reports by India Times, marks a significant milestone as it will be their first appearance in the competition, and their first tour of England in over two decades since their 2002 visit led by Bhaichung Bhutia.
The tournament will follow a knockout format, with semi-final winners advancing to the final, while the losing teams will compete for third place. Nigeria will face Zimbabwe in the opening semi-final in what will serve as a rematch of their recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying encounters.
In the second semi-final, Jamaica will take on India in a fixture expected to provide excitement both on and off the pitch.
Winners of the semi-finals will clash in the final on May 30, as Nigeria aim to retain their title, Jamaica seek redemption after last year’s defeat, and both India and Zimbabwe look to make a strong impression on the London stage.
