A 14-YEAR-OLD junior golfer and student of Technical College, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Malik Adams, has emerged champion of the inaugural Golf Shop NG Tournament after defeating a field of more than 170 players at the Elephant Cement Golf Club in Sagamu, Ogun State.
According to a statement sent to News Point Nigeria Sport on Wednesday by Middle Bridge Services, the consulting company for Golf Shop NG Ltd, Adams, who played off a 25 handicap, delivered one of the most remarkable rounds of the competition, posting a Net 61 (10-under-par) and Gross 86 to finish six strokes clear of his closest rival.
His performance was marked by consistency, composure and technical brilliance throughout the round. Adams reportedly recorded 16 pars and two birdies on holes 4 and 8, effectively outclassing a field that included experienced club players and seasoned amateurs.
The maiden edition of the tournament, organised by Golf Shop NG Ltd, attracted widespread attention within the regional golfing community, with more than 180 registered participants competing for honours at the well-attended event.
The ceremonial tee-off featured several prominent personalities, including the Ogun State Commissioner for Housing, Jagunmolu Akande Ọmọniyi; the Ẹbi of Ìdènà, Oba Lukman Adebambo Salami; the Asiwaju Adeen of Ogun State, Alhaji Adebayo Samsudeen Apelogun; retired Chief Justice of Kwara State, Rtd. Chief Justice Lambo Akanbi; Captain of Abeokuta Golf Club, Umar Bakare; and Captain of Elephant Cement Golf Club, Engr. Adedeji Ẹsan.
Speaking during the prize presentation ceremony, Ẹsan commended the organisers for elevating the profile of the club and creating a competitive platform that combines youth development with elite participation.
“We are delighted to witness this Golf Shop NG inaugural event. Mr. Kuti has brought a much-needed spotlight and glory to our club. We are fully committed and ready to host future editions of this tournament on our grounds,” Ẹsan stated.
Mr. Kuti, the organiser of the tournament, described the competition as a strategic step toward expanding grassroots golf development in Nigeria while also creating opportunities for emerging talents like Adams to compete alongside more experienced players.
“We are eager to further contribute to the growth and development of the prestigious golf game at the grassroots, and we are excited with the turnout and support we have so far received for the success of this tournament,” Kuti said.
He added, “We are also happy that part of our vision for the competition, which is to provide platforms for younger ones to also showcase and polish their skills in golf games, is already becoming a reality, and so we shall definitely not relent in our push for the betterment of this great game.”
While appreciating the efforts of the Local Organising Committee for putting together what he described as a highly successful and exciting golf tournament, Kuti also commended several multinational companies for supporting Golf Shop NG and contributing to the successful hosting of the event.
Golf Shop NG Ltd, a golf accessories and equipment company based at the Elephant Cement Golf Club in Sagamu, said the tournament marks its official entry into competitive event promotion, with plans already underway to sustain the initiative as part of broader efforts to develop and expand the sport across Ogun State and beyond.
