THE Federal Government has declared Friday a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 27 years of unbroken democratic rule.
The announcement was contained in a statement sent to News Point Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.
Ajani stated that the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the preservation of democratic ideals, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.
He assured that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to adopt appropriate measures to maintain and strengthen Nigeria’s internal security.
The minister also noted that a secure and stable environment remains essential for democracy to thrive and for national development to be sustained.
He urged Nigerians to view the public holiday as an opportunity for civic reflection and renewed commitment to national values.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo further stated that June 12 remains a significant date in Nigeria’s history, honouring the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of those whose efforts helped to establish democratic governance in the country.
“Their legacies continue to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,” he added.
