FINIDI George’s assistant coach at Enyimba, Yemi Olanrewaju, will step into the new Super Eagles coach’s role as head coach of Enyimba for the remainder of the season, following the exit of the ex-international from the helm of the reigning Nigeria Premier Football League champions.
Olanrewaju’s appointment was confirmed by the club in a statement on Thursday, one week after Finidi was unveiled as the Super Eagles coach by the Nigeria Football Federation.
“In light of coach George’s departure, Enyimba FC is pleased to announce the promotion of assistant coach Olanrewaju Yemi Daniel ‘Yema’ to the position of head coach until the end of the season,” the club said via a statement.
“Yema has been an integral part of the coaching staff, demonstrating his commitment, expertise, and leadership qualities throughout his tenure.”
Olanrewaju, who is currently pursuing his UEFA B coaching licence in Scotland, will oversee the remaining six NPFL games of the season as well as their progress in the President Federation Cup.
Enyimba are currently third in the NPFL with 53 points after 32 games and their last six matches will see them face local rivals Abia Warriors on Sunday, Rivers United, league leaders Enugu Rangers, Bayelsa United, Sporting Lagos and Plateau United.
Olanrewaju was an assistant coach last season when Finidi led the team to their ninth NPFL triumph at the Super 6 tournament in Lagos.
The former MFM and Vandrezzer assistant coach will now hope to finish what his boss started and claim the club’s historic 10th title in what will be his first major task in the NPFL.
