AKWA Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced a wardrobe allowance of N50,000 each for the 20,000 teachers employed by the state government.
News Point Nigeria reports that Eno also announced that the 1,776 registered private schools in the state would receive N500,000 each for their teachers, while approving the employment of 2,000 additional teachers, in addition to the 1,000 teachers recently employed.
Speaking on Monday at the Uyo Township Stadium during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration, the governor, who declared a total state of emergency on the education sector, also listed his administration’s achievements in the sector.
He stated that the government had released N15 billion as matching grant for the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), intervened in over 100 schools and paid the gratuity of teachers. He added that his administration had so far registered 172,000 students for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations and paid the examination fees.
“Every year we have met the matching grant of SUBEB, and today we have released the sum of N15 billion as matching grant of SUBEB and have intervened in over 100 schools. We have continued to pay gratuity to our teachers.
“We have upheld a free and compulsory education and we have consistently paid our WASSCE and NECO fees for all Akwa Ibom sons and daughters. Till date, we have registered 172,000 students for these examinations.
“I have granted approval for another 2,000 teachers, the portals will soon be open and you can apply, then you take the computer-based test. That you scored 100% in computer-based tests does not automatically convert to automatic employment.
“I have approved another N50,000 per teacher as a wardrobe allowance for all the 20,000 teachers that are employed. I have been briefed that there are 1,776 registered private schools in Akwa Ibom. For each of those schools registered, they will receive the sum of N500,000 so that they can also spread love to their teachers.
“I hereby declare a total state of emergency in the Akwa Ibom State’s educational system, and the Deputy Governor who herself is a teacher will work with the Commissioner for Education, will set up a team and will look at the educational sector holistically,” he stated.
The governor also named Prof. Philip Afangha as the Vice Chancellor of the Akwa Ibom University of Education and urged him to commence the work of securing the accreditation required for the institution.
Eno added that other members of the Vice Chancellor’s team would be named before the end of the week.
He said the government would ensure that all teachers were equipped with the tools they require to work effectively, while directing the Interministerial Committee to take over the uncompleted building of the NUT House and ensure that it is completed within six months.
