PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently holding a closed-door meeting with governors elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House, Abuja, just hours before the party’s crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, News Point Nigeria gathered.
The meeting, which began around 9:00pm on Wednesday in the Presidential Conference Hall, brings together members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), the official body of APC governors and is widely regarded as a strategic session to finalize consensus on key party matters.
News Point Nigeria reports that the the gathering is being led by Imo State Governor and PGF Chairman, Hope Uzodimma, who arrived alongside at least 23 APC governors.
Among the early arrivals were:Babagana Zulum (Borno), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Nasir Idris (Kebbi), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Usman Ododo (Kogi) and Senator Uba Sani (Kaduna)
Although the exact agenda of the meeting remains undisclosed, a source told this newspaper that the selection of a new APC National Chairman is high on the agenda.
The position became vacant in June 2025, when Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje resigned, citing health reasons.
His resignation created a leadership vacuum in the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), sparking debates over regional zoning and succession.
The source added that the acting chairman, Ali Bukar Dalori, is expected to oversee the NEC meeting, where issues such as: The ratification of congress schedules, formation of standing committees review of e-registration progress across the states will be formally discussed.
At the heart of ongoing consultations is the battle over zoning of the national chairmanship position.
While some party leaders are lobbying for the chairmanship to remain in the North-West, the same region as Ganduje, others strongly argue for its return to the North-Central, where the seat was originally zoned before the 2022 realignment.
Proponents of the North-Central option say that restoring the seat to the region ensures equity, internal party cohesion, and regional balance, especially as it had previously produced a chairman in Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
One name surprisingly circulating in discussions is Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a former Kano governor and presidential candidate under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
While his consideration remains speculative, some APC insiders see it as a signal of wider political realignments ahead of 2027.
Thursday’s NEC meeting, scheduled for 2:00pm at the Banquet Hall of the State House, is expected to be one of the most decisive gatherings in recent APC history.
Beyond leadership selection, it is expected to shape the party’s strategy for: upcoming by-elections, gubernatorial races in Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun and strengthening internal structures ahead of the 2027 elections
As Tinubu meets with his party’s power bloc late into the night, all eyes are on the NEC for clues about the APC’s next chapter, who will lead it, and how it will navigate the political storms ahead.
