FIFA has handed a 10-match ban to Leandro Paredes of Argentina for his role in the 2026 World Cup final brawl.
Nahuel Molina also received a seven-match ban, while Spain’s Gavi was also handed a single-game suspension for taking part in the post-match incident after Argentina’s 1-0 loss in the final.
Paredes and Molina are two of four members of the Argentina team that the FIFA disciplinary committee found guilty and handed match suspensions and fines.
The Argentina Football Association also received multiple disciplinary measures for breaching various articles of the FIFA disciplinary code.
After Spain won the final 1-0 at the New York New Jersey Stadium in July, a brawl ensued between both teams after the final whistle, and both Paredes and Molina physically assaulted Spanish players, while other indicted individuals played significant roles in the unsavoury scenes.
FIFA announced disciplinary proceedings against Argentina and its players afterwards, and the disciplinary committee returned a guilty verdict with sanctions.
The Argentine official included was Roberto Ayala, who received a three-match ban, while Thiago Almada received a one-match ban.
In addition to Paredes’ 10-match ban, the Boca Juniors midfielder was also slammed a $90,000 fine, while others received $30,000 fine each.
Argentina FA was hit with a $321,000 fine for FIFA Disciplinary Code breaches, including using a sports event for non-sporting demonstrations, discrimination and racist abuse, and breaches of order and security at matches.
FIFA also ordered the deposed world champions to play their next two home international matches with half their stadium closed to spectators.
FIFA added that the decision is subject to appeal and gave concerned parties 10 days to accept its verdict.
