PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday received Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, at the State House, Abuja, barely five days after the governor secured a second term in office in a keenly contested governorship election.
News Point Nigeria reports that Adeleke arrived at the State House at about 5:20 p.m. and was driven through the forecourt directly to the President’s office, where he immediately went into a closed-door meeting with Tinubu.
The purpose of the meeting was not immediately disclosed, but its timing has heightened political interest in the engagement, coming on the heels of Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 governorship election and amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adeleke, who contested the election on the Accord Party platform, was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after polling 511,067 votes.
He defeated his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 444,815 votes, giving the incumbent governor a winning margin of 66,252 votes.
The governor won in 19 of Osun’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji carried the remaining 11 councils in an election that attracted considerable national attention.
Adeleke’s re-election also marked a significant shift in Osun State’s political configuration following his move to the Accord Party ahead of the poll.
The state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under whose platform Adeleke won his first term in 2022, had adopted his candidature and directed its structures and supporters to back his re-election on the Accord Party platform.
Thursday’s meeting with Tinubu is consequently expected to attract particular attention within political circles, particularly as political parties and leading actors intensify consultations, alignments and repositioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The engagement also comes against the backdrop of a series of consultations by the President with political leaders and senior government officials as activities surrounding the next general elections gradually gather momentum.
Although there was no official indication of the agenda as the meeting commenced, the two leaders could discuss issues concerning Osun State, governance and federal-state relations, as well as broader national matters.
Adeleke’s victory has further consolidated his political standing in Osun, while his successful re-election on a platform different from the one on which he first became governor has introduced a new dimension to the state’s political landscape.
Details of the discussions between President Tinubu and Governor Adeleke were not available as of press time.
