TARABA State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has signed three executive orders aimed at strengthening peace and security across the state as part of efforts to tackle criminality and safeguard the lives and future of the people.
News Point Nigeria reports that the executive orders cover the prohibition of political thuggery, the protection of host mining communities, and the prohibition of drug abuse, including the enforcement of relevant penal provisions.
Speaking shortly after signing the executive orders, Governor Kefas said the measures had become necessary as a matter of urgency to strengthen security and protect residents of Taraba State from activities capable of threatening peace and development.
On drug abuse, the governor explained that the executive order was designed to reinforce the efforts of drug law enforcement agencies, stressing that the fight against substance abuse requires the collective responsibility of government, security agencies, parents, teachers, traditional rulers and the wider society.
Kefas expressed concern over the increasing rate of drug abuse in the state, noting that schools and other public places had increasingly become centres for the consumption of illicit substances.
According to him, his administration will not tolerate the destruction of the state’s future through drug abuse, assuring that decisive action would be taken in line with the provisions of the Constitution without infringing on the rights of citizens.
The governor also appealed to parents, teachers, security agencies, traditional institutions and community leaders to work together in protecting children and young people from the dangers associated with substance abuse.
Speaking on the executive order prohibiting political thuggery, Governor Kefas said the decision was informed by the approaching political campaigns and the need to preserve the peace and stability currently being enjoyed across Taraba State.
He recalled the efforts made by his administration to restore peace and security, insisting that his government would not allow anyone to disrupt public order or undermine the stability of the state.
On illegal mining activities, the governor explained that the executive order seeks to ensure responsible and well-coordinated mining operations while protecting the interests and welfare of host communities.
He added that the Taraba State Government would work closely with the Federal Government and the Minister of Solid Minerals Development to ensure that mining activities across the state are properly regulated and conducted strictly in accordance with the law.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the Taraba State Youth Development Agency, Gara Soyonga, and the Commissioner of Police, Sebastian Dongshal, described the executive orders as timely, noting that they would help prevent a breakdown of law and order, particularly as political campaigns and the 2027 elections approach.
