THE senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, Saliu Mustapha, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing recent developments within the Kwara State chapter of the ruling party.
News Point Nigeria reports that Mustapha disclosed his decision in a post on his verified Facebook page late Thursday, accompanied by a resignation letter dated August 14, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of the APC, Gambari Ward 1, Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The senator said his decision followed weeks of extensive consultations and engagements with relevant stakeholders, supporters, constituents across Kwara Central Senatorial District and other well-meaning Kwarans.
Mustapha said he did not take the decision to leave the APC lightly, explaining that it was prompted by recent developments within the party’s Kwara State chapter.
“Following careful consideration of the recent developments in the All Progressives Congress in Kwara State, I have formally resigned my membership of the party in the state,” he stated.
He said he had engaged relevant stakeholders and constituents extensively before reaching the decision to leave the ruling party.
“This is not a decision I have taken lightly. It follows weeks of extensive consultations and engagements with relevant stakeholders, my supporters, constituents across Kwara Central Senatorial District, and well-meaning Kwarans,” he added.
Mustapha, who was elected to the Senate on the platform of the APC, said his political decisions had always been guided by his belief that politics should be centred on people, principles and purpose.
“As a politician, I have always believed that politics must be about people, principles and purpose.
“Where the path of a political platform no longer sufficiently aligns with these convictions and the aspirations of the people one represents, the honourable thing to do is to chart a new course,” he said.
The senator, however, expressed gratitude to the APC leadership under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the relationships and experiences he gained during his years of membership of the party.
“To the leadership of the APC ably led by H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, I express my deepest gratitude for the relationships and experiences I have been afforded over the years,” he stated.
Mustapha also assured his constituents, supporters, political associates and stakeholders that his decision to resign from the APC would not alter his principles or affect his commitment to public service and representation.
“To my constituents, supporters, political associates and stakeholders in Kwara State and beyond, I assure you that while my political platform may change, my principles, my purpose and my commitment to the people remain unchanged,” Mustapha said.
He added, “I remain steadfast in my service to the people of Kwara Central, Kwara State and Nigeria at large.”
Mustapha’s resignation comes amid growing political realignments in Kwara State ahead of the 2027 general elections, as well as reported disagreements within the state chapter of the APC.
The senator had earlier emerged as one of the prominent political figures associated with the G15/TOP, a group of aggrieved APC stakeholders in Kwara State.
