MARYAM Abacha American University of Niger (MAAUN) Maradi matriculates no fewer than 430 students for the 2025/2026 academic session to pursue undergraduate studies across various fields of human endeavour, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s continued expansion and academic development.
The university, established in 2013 as the first bilingual university in Sub-Saharan Africa, has continued to play a vital role in the training of both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the sciences and humanities.
This effort is complemented by its commitment to promoting research and innovation within Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.
Speaking during the matriculation ceremony held on Saturday, the Director-Campus of the university, Dr. Shu’aibu Usman-Tanko, reminded the newly admitted students of the responsibilities ahead and urged them to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations guiding the institution.
He explained that the matriculation ceremony signifies the formal admission of candidates who have been deemed academically qualified, emotionally stable, and psychologically prepared to withstand the demands of academic engagement.
“Matriculation ceremony essentially denotes the formal admission of candidates who are adjudged academically qualified, emotionally stable, and psychologically ready to cope with the rigorous challenges of academic engagement,” he stated.
Dr. Usman-Tanko further charged the students to remain focused on their studies and avoid any behaviour that could tarnish their image as well as that of the university, stressing that the institution maintains a zero-tolerance stance on misconduct.
In separate interviews, some of the matriculating students described MAAUN as a conglomerate of universities recognised for academic excellence and global competitiveness.
One of the students noted that the institution provides a platform for growth and international exposure, pointing out that several graduates, particularly in the health sciences, are already pursuing professional careers abroad.
“MAAUN has given us the opportunity to grow. As you can see, many MAAUN health science graduates with professional careers are working abroad. The university is breaking barriers and paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse learning environment,” the student said.
Meanwhile, construction work is ongoing at the permanent site of the university located in Gwarzo town, Djiratawa, Maradi, with a total sum of N10 billion already committed to the project, reflecting the institution’s long-term vision for expansion.
Maryam Abacha American University operates within a broader academic network that includes MAAUN Maradi, MAAUN Kano in Nigeria, the Franco-British International University (FBIU) in Kaduna, and the Canadian University of Nigeria (CUN) in Abuja, further underscoring its growing footprint in higher education across the region.
