THE House of Representatives has dissolved all its Ad Hoc Committees with immediate effect, directing members of the affected committees to cease all activities being carried out in their names.
News Point Nigeria reports that the directive followed the expiration of deadlines given to the temporary committees to conclude their assignments and submit their reports in line with the Rules and established practice of the House. The dissolution took effect from Friday, August 28, 2026.
The directive was issued by the Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, and contained in a statement signed by the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Sidi Ibrahim, and addressed to all chairmen and members of the affected committees.
According to the statement, the dissolution followed earlier announcements urging the Ad Hoc Committees to conclude their assignments and submit their reports in line with the Rules and established practice of the House.
It stated that only two Ad Hoc Committees had sought and been granted extensions of time in accordance with Order 18, Rule 5 of the Standing Orders of the House, but the two-week extension granted to them had since elapsed.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Honourable Members are reminded that Ad Hoc Committees are temporary Committees of the House established for specific and time-bound mandates. They are not intended to subsist indefinitely beyond the purpose and period for which they were constituted,” the Clerk stated.
The statement further cited Order 18, Rule 11, Paragraph 5, of the Standing Orders, which provides for “Limitations as to time of Reports”, requiring committees to submit their reports within the time allotted.
“Having exceeded the time allotted, the continued existence of the Ad Hoc Committees is no longer tenable,” the statement said.
It added that, with effect from Friday, August 28, 2026, all Ad Hoc Committees of the House stood dissolved and that activities being carried out in the name of such committees “shall cease forthwith.”
Chairmen of the affected committees were directed to forward all outstanding reports, working documents, records and other materials relating to their assignments to the Office of the Clerk, House of Representatives, for safekeeping.
“Honourable Members are kindly requested to take note and ensure strict compliance, please,” the statement added.
The development effectively brings to an end the activities of the temporary committees whose mandates had exceeded the deadlines approved by the House, reinforcing the requirement that Ad Hoc Committees operate within the specific periods and mandates for which they were constituted.
