PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for a successful operation in Kogi State that led to the elimination of a notorious bandit kingpin, identified by the Presidency as Ibrahim Bastuji.
In a statement sent to News Point Nigeria by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the President described the operation as a significant blow to criminal networks terrorising communities in Kogi State and neighbouring areas.
He noted that Bastuji’s reign of violence, kidnappings and attacks on civilians had inflicted immense hardship on residents, adding that his neutralisation would help restore confidence and provide relief to affected communities.
“I congratulate our gallant troops on this decisive milestone. Nigeria will not surrender any part of its territory to criminals. Those who choose the path of violence against innocent citizens will find no hiding place. This success reflects the renewed determination of our security forces to secure every inch of our land,” President Tinubu was quoted a saying.
Onanuga added that the President also praised troops for another successful operation that led to the rescue of the widow of the late former Chief of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd).
According to the statement, the rescue demonstrated a high level of professionalism and the determination of security forces to confront criminal elements.
“The safe return of Hajiya Amina Rabe Abubakar is a source of relief to her family and to all Nigerians. I commend the intelligence coordination and bravery of the officers and men who executed the rescue operation. We owe a debt of gratitude to our troops who risk their lives daily to keep us safe,” the President added.
President Tinubu reassured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to equipping the Armed Forces with the resources, training and support needed to tackle banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
He also urged citizens to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely information and necessary support to aid ongoing security efforts across the country.
The decision to reconvene ahead of schedule comes amid growing concerns over insecurity across the country, including recent attacks, killings and incidents of abduction reported in several states.
The move also follows a similar action by the House of Representatives, which reconvened on Monday for an emergency sitting to consider an amendment to the 2025 Appropriation Act aimed at extending the implementation period for the capital component of the budget from June 30 to September 30.
With security challenges continuing to dominate national discourse, the June 23 emergency session is expected to provide senators with an opportunity to deliberate on pressing security concerns and other critical issues affecting the country.
