PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has approved new leadership appointments for two federal universities of education in Zaria, Kaduna State, and Kano State.
In a statement issued Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga made available to News Point Nigeria, the President named Prof. Yahaya Bunkure as Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Zaria, and Prof. Abdullahi Kodage as Vice Chancellor of the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.
The announcement also confirmed the appointment of Engr. Abdurrazaq Nakore as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Kano-based institution.
Prof. Yahaya Bunkure, an accomplished scholar in science education, currently serves as Vice Chancellor of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano. His academic career spans decades of teaching, research, and administrative leadership in Nigeria’s education sector.
Prof. Abdullahi Kodage, the new VC in Kano, is also a respected academic with extensive contributions to teacher education and curriculum development.
Meanwhile, Engr. Abdurrazaq Nakore, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), brings technical expertise and governance experience to the institution. He previously served as Executive Secretary of the Rural Electricity Board in Jigawa State.
Both the Federal University of Education, Zaria and the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano were formerly colleges of education before being upgraded to full-fledged universities between 2022 and 2023. The move was part of a broader strategy to enhance teacher training and professional education across the country.
Under the governing laws of the institutions, pro-chancellors serve a four-year term, while vice chancellors hold office for five years.
The appointments are seen as part of President Tinubu’s efforts to strengthen the education sector, particularly teacher education, which has long been identified as a critical foundation for improving learning outcomes nationwide.
