TENSION gripped Idogun community in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State on Friday after irate youths reportedly launched a violent attack on the Onidogun of Idogun, Oba Moses Bakare, his wife, and their son, Prince Victor Bakare, during the town’s New Yam Festival celebrations.
News Point Nigeria reports that the ugly incident occurred when Prince Victor, who had traveled to the community to celebrate with his parents, was allegedly ambushed by a faction of youths.
According to his account, the attackers subjected him to physical assault, leaving him with injuries, while also pouring urine and other filthy substances on him.
He further alleged that his mother, the Olori, was stripped half-naked in public, while the traditional ruler himself was manhandled.
Reacting to the ordeal, Oba Bakare described the assault as “barbaric, unfortunate, and unprovoked hostility” by a group of disgruntled youths.
“This is not only an insult to my person and my family but also a desecration of our tradition and community values,” the monarch said, while commending the Nigeria Police Force and Amotekun Corps for their swift intervention, which prevented further escalation.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident.
Its spokesperson, DSP Olusola Ayanlade, said in a telephone interview with Channels Television that the case was already under investigation.
“Yes, there was an attack reported in Idogun community. The case is under investigation, and we are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that justice is served,” Ayanlade assured.
The clash underscores growing tensions within the community, with observers pointing to long-running disputes among factions of youths and traditional authority.
The assault, which coincided with the New Yam Festival, has raised concerns about dwindling respect for traditional institutions and the need for stronger community mediation.
Residents fear that unless urgent steps are taken, the crisis may deepen divisions in the ancient community.
