A TRAGIC confrontation between operatives of the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force has left a police constable dead in Bauchi State, sparking outrage and a full-scale investigation by security authorities.

    RAMADAN KAREEM

The deceased officer, Constable Ukasha Muhammed (F/No 533164), was reportedly shot dead by soldiers following a violent altercation at a checkpoint in the Bayan Gari area of Bauchi metropolis on Friday, October 10, 2025.

The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday by its Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Wakil, who described the event as “deeply regrettable and utterly condemnable.”

According to the statement made available to News Point Nigeria, the incident began when a police patrol team led by Inspector Hussaini Samaila received a distress call about an assault on one of its members near Padimo Hotel.

“The patrol team encountered an assault on one of its members, Constable Ukasha Muhammed, by two individuals in front of Padimo Hotel. The remaining members of the team responded swiftly, resulting in the apprehension of one suspect while the other escaped,” Wakil said.

The arrested suspect was later identified as Private Usman Mubarak (23NA/84/5346), a soldier attached to the Joint Task Force, Operation Safe Haven, based in Jos, Plateau State.

What started as a simple arrest soon escalated into tragedy. According to police accounts, two other soldiers, Private Yakubu Yahuza (23NA/85/10185) and Private Godspower Gabriel (23NA/84/5654) stormed the scene moments later, partially dressed in military uniforms and armed with rifles.

“They approached the police team and opened fire, fatally shooting Constable Ukasha Muhammed in the left side of his chest before fleeing the scene,” the statement revealed.

The injured officer was immediately rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed his death. His remains have since been deposited in the hospital’s mortuary.

SP Wakil disclosed that the detained soldier, Private Mubarak, is now in police custody, while efforts are ongoing to track down his fleeing colleagues.

He confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has constituted a team of homicide detectives to ensure a thorough investigation and to bring those responsible to justice.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed a professional and diligent investigation to ensure justice for the deceased officer. We assure the public that the command will not relent until those behind this heinous act are held accountable,” Wakil said.

He also called for calm and restraint among police officers and the public, emphasizing that the situation was under control.

In his message of condolence, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu described Constable Muhammed’s death as a painful and avoidable tragedy, extending sympathy to the bereaved family and colleagues of the slain officer.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may Aljannatul Firdausi be his final abode. May Almighty Allah grant his family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the police chief said.

As of press time, neither the Nigerian Army Headquarters nor the Defence Media Operations directorate had issued an official statement on the matter.
