THE Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed the Katsina State Police Command to intensify security around schools across the state as part of efforts to safeguard students, teachers and educational facilities from emerging security threats.
News Point Nigeria reports that the directive was conveyed by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of Finance and Administration, Sulaiman Abdul, during a two-day operational visit to Katsina State aimed at assessing security arrangements and strengthening protective measures around educational institutions.
Speaking during the visit, DIG Abdul disclosed that the Katsina State Police Command had been mandated to strengthen surveillance operations, increase patrols around schools, enhance intelligence gathering and maintain a visible security presence at educational institutions across the state.
According to him, the initiative is intended to deter criminal activities, improve emergency response capabilities and ensure that schools remain safe and conducive environments for learning, teaching and academic development.
As part of the operational assessment exercise, the DIG visited the Police Children School and the Government Girls Technical and Commercial College in Charanchi Local Government Area, where he inspected existing security arrangements and critical infrastructure within the institutions.
During the inspection, Abdul evaluated perimeter fencing, entry and exit points, security posts and the deployment of police personnel assigned to protect the schools. He also assessed the overall readiness of security structures put in place to safeguard students, teachers and other members of the school community.
The DIG further held separate meetings with school administrators and management teams to obtain first-hand information on security concerns and operational challenges confronting the institutions.
Discussions during the engagements focused on strategies to improve school safety, strengthen collaboration between educational authorities and security agencies, and enhance preparedness against potential security threats.
Abdul urged school managements to adopt stricter access-control procedures, maintain constant vigilance and promptly report any suspicious movement or activity within and around their premises to relevant security agencies.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to protecting educational institutions, the DIG stressed that the force remains determined to ensure that schools across Katsina State operate in a secure environment where students and teachers can carry out their activities without fear.
He added that the police would continue to work closely with school authorities, communities and other stakeholders to strengthen security architecture around schools and guarantee the safety of learners and education personnel across the state.
