A CUSTOMS officer identified as Deputy Superintendent of Customs (DSC) S. Muhammad has been brutally killed by suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
News Point Nigeria reports that the tragic incident occurred around midnight on Saturday when the heavily armed assailants stormed the Maje Customs Border Outstation, opening fire on personnel manning the post.
Security sources told reporters that the attackers shot the officer at close range before setting his patrol vehicle ablaze, leaving the area in chaos and fear.
Muhammad’s remains were later evacuated and deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, with burial scheduled for Sunday in accordance with Islamic rites.
The deadly attack has heightened tension among security agencies stationed along the Kebbi border corridor, particularly those involved in anti-smuggling operations targeting armed networks suspected to be collaborating with criminal syndicates outside Nigeria.
Sources say threats issued by the Lakurawa terror group, a gang known for violent cross-border activities — have left officers worried about their safety and increasingly cautious while enforcing border laws.
“We are doing our best, but the fear is real,” one officer said anonymously, describing an atmosphere of anxiety among personnel.
As at the time of this report, the Nigeria Customs Service is yet to issue an official statement, but officers on ground say they are awaiting directives on fresh safety protocols.
