THE Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has resigned from office, bringing a dramatic twist to the political developments in the state following impeachment proceedings initiated against him by the Kano State House of Assembly.
News Point Nigeria reports that the resignation was formally announced on Friday in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Habibu Sale Mohammed.
Abdussalam’s exit comes days after the Kano State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings over allegations yet to be fully resolved in court.
In a related development, a Federal High Court sitting in Kano had, on Wednesday, declined an application filed by the deputy governor seeking to halt the impeachment process, effectively allowing the legislative action to proceed.
Announcing the development, the Kwankwasiyya Movement described the resignation as a difficult but necessary step taken in the broader interest of governance and stability in Kano State.
“The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform the general public, the good people of Kano State, and the entire nation that the Deputy Governor of Kano State has tendered his resignation from office,” the statement read.
It added that recent political developments had significantly constrained the deputy governor’s ability to fully discharge the responsibilities of his office.
“Recent circumstances have, to a considerable extent, constrained the full realization of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office of the Deputy Governor. In view of this, it has become imperative to allow the office to function optimally in the best interest of the public it is meant to serve,” the statement said.
The movement was quick to clarify that Abdussalam’s resignation does not amount to an admission of wrongdoing.
It stressed that the former deputy governor maintains his innocence regarding the allegations raised by the Kano State House of Assembly.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him… The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people,” the statement added.
The resignation was further described as an act of statesmanship aimed at preventing political tensions from escalating into a full-blown crisis that could disrupt governance and development in the state.
“The Deputy Governor has also resolved to dedicate more time and energy to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly in strengthening its structures, rebuilding strategies, and engaging in critical political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the statement noted.
The movement urged its supporters and residents of Kano State to remain calm, law-abiding, and committed to democratic values.
It also assured that further details regarding the development would be communicated in due course.
