HIS Eminence, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has officially declared Monday, May 18, 2026, as the first day of Dhul Hijjah 1447 After Hijrah (AH).
The announcement was contained in a press statement issued by Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council, and sent to News Point Nigeria on Sunday.
According to the statement, the declaration followed the successful sighting of the crescent moon, signalling the commencement of the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
The statement noted that Dhul Hijjah remains one of the most spiritually significant periods for Muslims worldwide, as it encompasses the observance of Eid al-Adha as well as the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
“With this declaration, Muslims in Nigeria and beyond will begin preparations for the sacred rites and celebrations associated with Zulhijja, including the Eid al-Adha festival, which is expected to fall on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 (10th Dhul Hijja), subject to confirmation,” the statement read.
The Sultanate Council also called on the Muslim Ummah to utilise the sacred period for spiritual reflection, increased devotion, and prayers for peace, unity and prosperity in the country.
It further advised members of the public to rely on official communications from the Sultanate Council and other recognised Islamic authorities for updates regarding the observance of the season.
