THE convoy of the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Imo state for the November 11 governorship election in the state, Senator Athan Achonu was on Sunday ambushed at an Anglican Church in Obibiezena.
According to a family source, Senator Achonu was on his way to attend a meeting at the church when the incident happened.
“Gunmen suspected to be Uzodinma’s rogue squad shot sporadically at us to prevent us from entering the church and we were accompanied by unarmed women supporters”, the source told this newspaper.
A video obtained by News Point Nigeria showed Senator Achonu and his wife Aisha Achonu standing amidst armed guard while people around run and scamper for safety, and another video showed Achonu’s convoy surrounded by armed guards with multiple gunshots heard in the background.
This newspaper cannot ascertain the casuality level of the attack as at the time of filing this report.
Recall Senator Achonu had on Thursday mocked the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu (Sam Daddy) and the PDP over their recent claims that 4385 members of Labour Party and Obidents have defected to the PDP to support the party’s governorship ambition.
According to Achonu, Anyawu and his party the PDP have taken their jokes to a different laughable dimension as he insisted that no member of the Obidents movement and Labour Party ever joined Sen. Anyanwu and PDP on their governorship ambition which he described as a joke.
