PETER Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
News Point Nigeria reports that the two opposition figures were officially registered as members of the party on Sunday at the NDC national secretariat in Abuja, where they were issued membership cards, signalling their formal entry into the party.
Footage from the event showed Kwankwaso receiving his membership card first before Obi was also formally admitted into the party in the presence of party officials and supporters.
Their defection came shortly after Obi publicly announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal challenges and recurring political crises within the party.
Kwankwaso had also earlier disclosed that he was involved in “wide-ranging consultations” with the NDC and other political stakeholders over his political future.
The latest development followed a closed-door meeting held just hours earlier between the two political leaders and top officials of the NDC at the Abuja residence of the party’s National Leader and former Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson.
The strategic meeting, which took place at Dickson’s residence in the Guzape district of Abuja, was believed to be part of broader efforts aimed at consolidating opposition forces and building a formidable coalition ahead of the next general elections.
Obi and Kwankwaso reportedly arrived at the meeting venue at about 5:18 p.m., where they were welcomed by enthusiastic supporters under the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement.
Supporters were seen chanting “O-K is okay” as the two leaders made their way into the premises.
Kwankwaso appeared in a white babanriga paired with his trademark red-and-white Kwankwasiyya cap, while Obi dressed in an all-black kaftan with a matching cap.
