THE Department of Mass Communication of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), in collaboration with the Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo Foundation (AAG Foundation), has organised a photojournalism training workshop aimed at equipping students with practical skills in photography and visual storytelling.

    ABDULSAMAD

News Point Nigeria reports that the workshop, held on August 18, 2026, at Alliance Française, Kano, was organised in commemoration of World Photography Day 2026 and brought together academic and industry perspectives to expose students to the creative, technical and documentary aspects of photography.

Themed “Capturing Reality: The Art and Impact of Photojournalism,” the event featured professionals in photojournalism, documentary photography and visual arts as resource persons.

Speaking during the workshop, Abdulwahab Said Ahmad, a photojournalist and founder of Blue Lens Multimedia, delivered a presentation on “Beyond Camera: Photojournalism as a Tool for Social Change.”

Ahmad explained how photographers could use their work not only to document events but also to raise public awareness and contribute to positive social change.

Also speaking, Dr Musa Abdullahi Sufi, Director of the AAG Foundation, delivered a presentation titled “Capturing Impact, Telling Stories: The Power of Photojournalism in Promoting Sustainable Development.”

Dr Sufi highlighted the power of compelling images in drawing attention to social issues, telling impactful stories and promoting sustainable development.

On his part, Balarabe Uba Abdullahi took the students through a session on “Architectural Photography and Documentary.”

His presentation exposed participants to techniques for documenting buildings, landscapes, people and places while maintaining accuracy, creativity and visual appeal.

As part of the practical component of the training, the students were taken to Dala Hills, one of Kano’s most significant historical landmarks, where they had the opportunity to connect photography with the documentation and preservation of the state’s historical and cultural heritage.

At Dala Hills, the students received hands-on instruction on different aspects of photography and various shot types. They were equally taught how to frame subjects, capture different perspectives, work with natural light and produce images suitable for journalistic and documentary purposes.

The training provided the students with an opportunity to apply lessons from the classroom in a real-world environment while documenting one of Kano’s historic landmarks.

At the end of the programme, certificates of participation were presented to the participants in recognition of their completion of the training.
