Motorists Panic As Police Begin Nationwide Enforcement Of Car Insurance Today

CAR owners across the country have been thrown into a wide state of panic as the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the mandatory Third-Party Insurance policy nationwide, beginning February 1, 2025.

    NEW UBA

The directive, issued by Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), aims to strengthen road safety measures and ensure compliance with insurance regulations among vehicle owners, according to a statement released on Friday by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force public relations officer.

    NNAMDI

He said, “In line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., the Nigeria Police Force once again reiterates the enforcement of the Mandatory Third Party Insurance which will commence on February 1st, 2025.

“This initiative aims to reinforce road safety measures and ensure that all vehicle owners comply with the stipulated insurance requirements to protect themselves and others on the road.”

The Force cautioned motorists against non-compliance, warning that failure to obtain valid Third-Party Insurance would attract strict enforcement actions.

“Failure to possess valid Third Party Insurance will result in strict enforcement actions, including fines or penalties or both, as mandated by relevant extant laws,” the statement read.

The directive instructs all vehicle owners nationwide to ensure they have valid insurance coverage, as police officers will be empowered to conduct checks and penalise defaulters accordingly.

“Those without the Insurance are advised to be insured quickly to avoid any sort of embarrassment,” the statement added.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to enhancing road safety and protecting the lives of all citizens through the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations. Cooperation from members of the public in this crucial endeavor is much appreciated,” Adejobi said.

Nigerian TAX Reform - Federal Goverment

Speaking with News Point Nigeria on the matter, a civil servant in Abuja, Kabiru Adamu said; “I tried to get the third party insurance thing last week but the cost is a bit high, if the govt can work down on the price for Nigerians, it will be a good thing but meanwhile, I have resolved to use public transport for now”.
