TROOPS of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kasuwan Daji, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, have successfully repelled an attempted infiltration by terrorists.

News Point Nigeria reports that the Nigerian Army said the failed assault resulted in heavy casualties for the attackers, forcing them to retreat in disarray, while troops also rescued nine abducted civilians during a follow-up operation.

The Army, however, disclosed that one Army officer and one police officer lost their lives during the fierce encounter, which occurred at about 1:40 a.m. on August 2, 2026, when terrorists attempted to exploit the cover of darkness to breach the military facility.

According to the military authorities, vigilant troops detected the hostile movement early and responded with coordinated and overwhelming firepower, compelling the terrorists to abandon their mission and flee in confusion.

A statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, explained that reinforcements were immediately deployed after the initial exchange of gunfire.

The statement read in part: “Following the initial engagement, reinforcements arrived, and troops launched a hot pursuit of the fleeing terrorists, who had abducted an unspecified number of residents from the surrounding community during the attack. The relentless pursuit by the troops led to the rescue of nine abducted locals, who were safely recovered.”

Osoba said that despite the operational success, one Army officer and one police officer paid the supreme price during the intense firefight.

He added that two soldiers also sustained gunshot wounds during the operation and were promptly evacuated by air for advanced medical treatment.

“Regrettably, one Army officer and one police officer paid the supreme price during the heavy firefight. Additionally, two soldiers sustained gunshot wounds and were promptly evacuated by air for advanced medical care; both personnel remain in stable condition,” the statement added.

The Army further disclosed that troops have since secured and dominated the general area and are currently conducting exploitation operations to determine the full extent of the terrorists’ losses while ensuring the continued safety of residents.

According to the military, the failed infiltration attempt represents yet another major operational setback for the terrorists, capping what it described as a costly weekend for the criminal group amid intensified military offensives across the North-West theatre.

The Army noted that the outcome underscored the increasing difficulty armed groups now face in carrying out coordinated attacks against highly alert and combat-ready troops, further weakening their combat capability, morale and freedom of action.

The military also dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that six security personnel were killed during the attack.

“Contrary to rumours circulating online that six personnel died, it is worthy to mention that only one Army officer and one policeman paid the supreme price,” the statement clarified.

Reaffirming its determination to sustain ongoing military operations, the Army stated that Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains committed to maintaining offensive actions against terrorist groups, protecting vulnerable communities and dismantling criminal networks until lasting peace and security are fully restored across the North-West.
