THE Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, on Sunday opened up on his decision not to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State, saying he stepped aside after deep reflection despite mounting pressure and repeated calls from supporters urging him to join the race.
News Point Nigeria reports that Pate disclosed this in a 10-minute video message delivered in Hausa and circulated on social media, where he explained that he arrived at the decision after deep reflection and extensive consultations.
Citing national service as the major reason for stepping aside, the minister said he still has significant contributions to make to Nigeria’s development at the national level, as well as to the progress of Northern Nigeria.
“It is unlikely that I will run for governorship in 2027, and I assure you that you will not regret the love and support you have shown me throughout this period,” he said.
Despite withdrawing from the race, Pate pledged to remain actively involved in the political process leading to the emergence of a credible governorship candidate and the victory of his party in the state.
“There are many aspirants seeking various elective positions in Bauchi State. The time will come when I will support credible and capable candidates who have the interest of the people at heart, not self-centred leaders. We will identify the best candidates during the primaries,” he added.
The minister also appealed to other aspirants to remain patient and support whoever emerges victorious during the party primaries, stressing that if he could sacrifice his personal ambition, others should be willing to do the same.
Pate further stated that he would work towards ensuring the victory of the All Progressives Congress in Bauchi State at all levels for the benefit of the people.
He thanked his supporters for their loyalty and confidence in him, promising to intensify efforts towards delivering meaningful development and impactful interventions for Nigerians.
Pate had previously contested for the Bauchi governorship three times but failed to secure his party’s ticket during the primaries.
