THE governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has appointed Super Eagles and Udinese of Italy goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, as an ambassador of the Southeastern state.
Okoye, who hails from Enugu State, is currently spending time at home after a long season with his Italian club, which he helped finish 12th in Serie A.
Governor Mbah also promised to provide land for the football academy which Okoye wants to establish in Enugu.
The governor made this known in a post on his X handle following a meeting with the player on Tuesday in Enugu.
He wrote, “Today, I had the pleasure of receiving the Super Eagles and Udinese star goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, at the Lion Building.
“A true son of Enugu, Maduka is not just making us proud on the national and global stage, he is also poised to give back. He shared his vision to launch a charitable foundation and establish a football academy right here in Enugu, to inspire young talents, nurture future stars, and touch lives.
“In recognition of his achievements and commitment, I’m proud to appoint him as an Ambassador of Enugu State. He will serve as a role model to our children, especially those in our Smart Green Schools, and inspire a new generation of dreamers and achievers.
“To support his football academy, I have committed to providing land for the project. I also invited him to participate in the next edition of Enugu International Marathon, which will feature elite runners from around the world.
“At the heart of our vision is the youth – their talent, passion, and future. And with proud sons like Maduka Okoye, Enugu is truly rising.”
According to a statement by Governor Mbah’s media aide, Dan Nwomeh, Okoye expressed excitement at returning to his roots and announced plans to launch a charitable foundation and establish a football academy in the state.
He said these initiatives aimed to give back to society, inspire young talents, and nurture future stars.
“I’m truly excited to be back home. Enugu is my origin and I carry it with pride everywhere I go. I look forward to giving back by setting up a foundation for humanitarian causes and a football academy to mentor and train aspiring players,” he said.
