THE Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, on Thursday failed to reconvene plenary as scheduled, further deepening uncertainty surrounding the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
News Point Nigeria reports that the Assembly had, during its first sitting of 2026 last Thursday, initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy over allegations of gross misconduct.
Among the allegations cited by the lawmakers were the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, alleged unauthorised expenditure of public funds, and other actions said to have been carried out without legislative approval.
At the end of the sitting, the House adjourned plenary to Thursday, January 15, 2026, with expectations that deliberations on the impeachment process would continue.
However, as of 12 noon on Thursday, our correspondent who visited the Assembly venue observed that there were no signs of legislative activity or preparations for plenary.
The lawmakers currently hold sittings at the conference hall of their official legislative quarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, following the demolition of the main Assembly complex.
Despite the scheduled date for reconvening, the venue remained largely deserted, with no indication that the House would sit.
As of the time of filing this report, no official explanation had been offered for the failure to reconvene, and no new date for resumption had been announced by the Assembly leadership.
Efforts to obtain clarification from the House Committee Chairman on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Eneme George, proved unsuccessful.
Multiple phone calls placed to him were unanswered, and text messages sent seeking comments were yet to receive a response.
As of now, the fate of the impeachment proceedings remains unclear, with all eyes on the Assembly leadership for the next move.
